Water Softeners
Water Softeners
Water Hardness refers to dissolved calcium or magnesium in the drinking supply. The calcium and magnesium are results of water passing through limestone deposits that dissolve into the water.
The more limestone between ground level and water supply, the higher the hardness levels will be. Hardness is especially present in well water, where water falls to the earth and filters through the surface down to aquifers or the water table from which well pumps draw water; however, city water can also be hard. Hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG).
The following guideline is generally used to measure in residential water: 0.0- 0.9 GPG= soft water, 1.0-3.9 GPG= slightly hard water, 4.0-7.0 GPG= moderately hard water, 7.1-12.0 GPG= hard water. Over 12.0 GPG is considered to be very hard.
Water treatment systems for hardness use salt to remove the calcium and magnesium from the water. Water softeners use a cation exchange which is two tanks, one contains a resin that exchanges sodium ions for the calcium ions in the water.
The other is filled with salt to create brine which rinses off the resin during backwashing. Backwashing is a rinsing cycle in which the brine solution rinses the calcium ions off the resin and replenishes the resin with sodium ions.
Types of Softeners Electronic clock
This softener is automatically programmed to rinse and replenish the resin at set intervals‐ generally every 7‐14 days‐ based on a prediction of when the maximum amount of hardness has been removed and the resin is full.
Demand Regeneration
This has a water meter in the system and rather than rinsing and replenishing on a set cycle, the systems waits until it calculates that the resin is full.
